Are you a beginner in the world of essential oils? Come and take a little dive into our introduction on what they are all about!

Whether you’re just beginning to dabble with essential oils or you’ve been using them for a while now, here’s a nice little rundown on what they are and how they can be used.

What are They?

A core part of the J.D. Holistics product foundation is essential oils. Why? Let’s start with what essential oils really are. A general definition is that essential oils are aromatic, yet volatile liquids taken from plant material through a process called steam distillation (1). The chemically pure compounds in these oils are particularly strong and can cause irritation to the body when used alone. However, when mixed with a carrier oil, the potential benefits are endless. These oils carry the concentrated ‘essence’ of each plant they’re derived from.

I think it’s pretty common for us to forget that bodily wellness is directly connected to wellness of the mind and spirit (or soul), which is why a lot of us might be feeling a little more out of balance these days. But have no fear! Essential oils are a holistic solution to maintaining good health in all three areas; body, mind and spirit.

Not only do they have a huge variety of amazing aromas but they actually have amazing health benefits! No matter how you choose to use them, essential oils can have anti microbial, antiviral, antibiotic, antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties depending on which oils you use. Those awesome smells also bring soothing psychological effects.

How Can I Use Them?

The most common way to use essential oils is by adding a few drops to a diffuser or humidifier with water. It can also be directly applied to the skin, but it’s important to dilute it with a carrier oil to avoid skin irritation. In some cases, they can be ingested by adding a few drops of essential oil to a glass of water but this is only safe with a few types (like peppermint) and it’s important to do your research before trying this.

I love to use essential oils in my diffusers to keep the house smelling good but that’s not the only way I use them. Another great way to make the most out of these amazing oils is by adding them to balms, salves, and bath salts or even just diluting them with some sweet almond oil to rub on my skin. The possibilities are endless and it’s so much fun to explore different combinations of oils to take full advantage of their benefits.
